Today is officially Leigh Hurst & FYB Day here in PA!

County Comm Photo 4.JPG

To my pleasant surprise, today was proclaimed by the Dauphin County Commissioners to be
"Leigh Hurst and Feel Your Boobies Foundation Day"!!

Wow -- how cool is that??

I was invited to attend the Dauphin County Commissioners meeting today in Harrisburg and was aware that I was being honored for my work with breast cancer awareness, but had no idea I would be lucky enough to have this entire day be in honor of ME and FYB!!!

Thanks to Nick, Jeff, and George for their kind words about the campaign and the recognition of FYB through this Proclamation.  It really is a pleasure to be helping residents in Central PA become more aware of this disease.

Top 40 Under 40 in Central PA!

Well, as much as I hate to admit that I'm nearing 40 (how did that happen???), at the same time I welcome any birthday because, after breast cancer, getting old never sounded so good before.

Last week, I was recognized by the Central Penn Business Journal as one of the Top 40 Under 40 in Central PA.  Each year they recognize outstanding business leaders for their achievements and this year I was honored to be included in this list for the work I do through Feel Your Boobies!

Boobies Bash & National FYB Week a success!

This was a busy month for us to say the least.  Our "Are You Doing It?" campaign is definitely gaining national attention for the work that we're doing and this has been evidenced by the amount of unsolicited media inquiries we've received.  As I look back over 2008 and review our initial goals for this year, I'm pleasantly surprised with how much we've accomplished.  Our goal this year was to focus 100% of our efforts on spreading our message to young women -- whereas in years past we've worked with Public Relations firms and consultants to help us get our message out.  While these efforts weren't for naught, what we decided at the end of 2007, was that the best use of our money is to use it to do good things in the world and trust that media attention will follow if we're doing our job well.  This approach has yielded only positive results for FYB, the most notable being testimonials from women who believe our campaign was the reason why their breast cancer was found at an early stage.

Just this month we hosted our 5th annual fall event, the Boobies Bash and we also hosted the 2nd Annual National Feel Your Boobies Week.  I was encouraged at how much buzz we received around National FYB Week and how many local and national followers planned grassroots efforts to help us spread our message during this week.  To celebrate the end of National FYB Week we hosted our annual Boobies Bash Fundraiser in Harrisburg and this year we raised over $15,000 that will help fund our 2009 Reminder Campaign.

Stayed tuned for more exciting news from Boobies Central -- the best is yet to come.

Boobies Basics: Stuff, Stuff and even MORE pink ribbon stuff...

Boobies Basics
Stuff, Stuff and even MORE pink ribbon stuff…
By: Leigh Hurst

By this time of year, it’s likely that you’ve had it up to your eyeballs with the pink ribbon.  After all, it’s on virtually everything these days.  From your favorite soup, to appliances, to just about any other stuff you can imagine.  Breast cancer awareness has quickly become the cause marketer’s dream.

Don’t get me wrong, the iconic pink ribbon has certainly helped to put breast cancer in the spotlight since its introduction in the early 90’s.  Who can really argue that having an internationally recognized symbol like the pink ribbon isn’t helpful in illustrating the enormity of this health issue.  As evidenced by the thousands of pink ribbon magnets you see on cars, this disease has undoubtedly touched the lives of many.

But when does the use of the pink ribbon cross the line into exploitation or merchandising of a very serious disease?  And how can we be sure that the use of the ribbon in the name of “breast cancer awareness” actually translates into what I like to call “breast cancer action”?

Early on in my work with Feel Your Boobies®, we did a casual survey of young women to find out just how much they knew about breast cancer.  We asked them very simple questions related to basic breast health like “How often should you feel your boobies?” and “At what age do mammograms start?”.  What we found was very interesting.  All of them knew that pink ribbon was the symbol for breast cancer, but very few of them knew much beyond that.

In order to make a real difference with this disease, I feel very strongly that we need to focus on “breast cancer action” and I use this basic idea as one of my guiding principles in the way Feel Your Boobies® operates.  While our slogan may be funny and even provocative in nature, the real message that we’re spreading is that it’s important to know how your own breasts feel so that you know when a change occurs. We are starting to get testimonials from women who feel that our campaign caused them to begin “feeling their boobies” and as a result they found a lump.  That’s what I call “breast cancer action.”

So next time you’re pondering a pink ribbon purchase in the name of “breast cancer awareness” take an extra minute to really think about whether or not what you’re buying is truly making a difference.  “Breast cancer awareness” is good, but “breast cancer action” is even better.

Park Ridge, NJ -- Every Win Counts expands

For the past two years the Park Ridge NJ High School varsity girls athletes have been supporting the Feel Your Boobies Foundation through their Every Win Counts program.  Coach Mike Weaver, in honor of his mother, started the program to get the girls more engaged in the Breast Cancer cause -- and he certainly has done just that.  Last year they raised nearly $5,000 and this year they plan to double that -- wow!

Below is a link to an recent article about their efforts -- as the article notes, I will be visiting them in January during one of their tournaments.  I'm very much looking forward to it and am ever impressed with their enthusiasm and support.  This summer's expanded Boobies @ the Beach aerial ad campaign was primarily funded by the donations from this program.
