Boobies Bash expands -- even amidst setbacks

bashLogo_ithaca.jpg

A group of communication students from Ithaca College took Feel Your Boobies on as their client for a class project.  Their goal was to plan and execute an event and the result is something quite impressive.  During the day on April 5th, the Boobies Bus will be on display in the Ithaca Commons, where we'll be handing out materials about breast cancer as well as promoting the evening fundraiser, the Boobies Bash. In the evening, the students will be hosting a Boobies Bash in Ithaca on April 5th, 2008 at the Second Floor Bar in Ithaca. This is the first time a group outside of Feel Your Boobies has planned this event and our goal is to use this experience to create a packaged event that other can use to do the same thing.

Money raised from the Boobies Bash in Ithaca was slated to be used to run a billboard in the town to target the approximately 30,000 college students there.  To my extreme disappointment, as an Ithaca College alumna who loved the liberal feel of this college town, Park Outdoor (the local billboard company) has denied our request to purchase billboard space in town. Hmmm - more to come on that, I'm sure.  So, instead, the students have decided to make general donation to our Boobies Awareness Campaign to suport our Aerial Ad campaign at the New Jersey Shore this summer.  Change is never easy, I suppose, but I am disheartened when good that could be done is halted due to some people's views about the word "boobies".  Though not yet confirmed, I'm almost certain that gentlemen's clubs have been able to run billboards owned by Park -- comparitively speaking one might question the rationale there.  I decided to write an article about this -- so stay tuned for that.

Another Boobies Bash is also in the works in York, PA on April 11th at Harp & Fiddle.  This too is the first time the event will be held outside of Harrisburg, PA and we're looking forward to gaining momentum with this event in other locations soon.  Check out the article promoting the York event -- click here.

Business Women's Forum a success!

ClearChannel Radio, one of our media partners for the Boobies Bus, was generous enough to share their booth with us at the Business Women's Forum in Harrisburg PA yesterday.  We were able to bring the Boobies Bus into the expo hall and have it on display -- which caused plenty of attention around our booth!

We've gotten so many requests for Boobies Bus appearances we can hardly keep up with them.  If you're interested in having the Boobies Bus at your next event, be sure to contact us early so we can work it into our schedule!

The Bus is WORKING!!!

You gotta love it when you see evidence that the Boobies campaign is working.  The link below shows the Boobies Bus parked outside of Jefferson University Hospital in downtown Philadelphia earlier this week when we attended an event. A passerby was moved enough to take a photo and then post it to a blog to share with their friends -- I only hope the stole a magnet too!

Boobies Basics: My letter to Rachel

Resize of Leigh Headshot_Aug 2007l.jpg

As you know, I've been writing a series of articles for a local women's publication.  The goal of the articles is to discuss common myths or misunderstandings about breast cancer from my experience.  This article, however, I decided to write about my friend Rachel who I posted to the blog last April.  She lost her battle with breast cancer in January and I wrote this article after my final visit with her.  If you haven't visited her beautiful blog, you should -- it will make you smile and cry all at once.  http://rachellevin.blogspot.com/

************************************

I have found the work I do through Feel Your Boobies hugely gratifying, cathartic, motivating and meaningful.  I’ve never felt this way about a job before.  Being able to spend everyday pursuing something you’ve created and truly feel makes a difference in the world is a gift that breast cancer has given me.  It centers me and it heals me.

Through my travels with Boobies so many amazing people have come into my life.  New friends and mentors; people I would have never known had I returned to my “normal” life after breast cancer.  But, by the nature of the beast, I am now surrounded by the possibility that one of my new friends or mentors might be taken from this world before their work is done.  I’ve thought about this occasionally, but until recently it’s never really hit home.

My friend Rachel entered hospice care on a warm Friday in January with so much left to do in her life.  She so gracefully fought breast cancer even though it was unstoppable in its mission to take over her body.  Her will was strong enough to beat it, but her body and the unfathomable amount of chemotherapy she endured, in the end, was no match for the beast.

I met Rachel in March of last year.  She was cancer-free at the time but only weeks away from finding out that her cancer had returned and spread to her liver, lungs, bones and soft tissue.  I learned this on the day I was “celebrating” my 3 year anniversary from being diagnosed and it shook me to the core.  For her, it was less than 2 years from her original diagnosis, and only months after getting married to the man of her dreams.  A young woman in her 30’s very much looking forward to moving beyond breast cancer, but halted by this unwelcome news.

I felt an immediate bond with Rachel when we met.  We were both very driven women and very much in love with the men we had waited nearly 35 years to find. We both were diagnosed in our 30’s with no family history of the disease and shared a burning desire to make a difference in the breast cancer community, but in a way that reflected our own creativity and experience with the disease.

In the beginning of Feel Your Boobies I viewed the work I did as a choice I made – I realized I didn’t have to dedicate my life to helping this cause.  I didn’t have to open myself to the great losses I will inevitably feel or the reminders that this, too, could be my fate.  I don’t have to, but I do.  After visiting with Rachel and trying to absorb every bit of her that I could, I realized that doing Feel Your Boobies is no longer a choice for me – it’s so much a part of me now that I can’t imagine doing anything else.

I will miss Rachel with all of my heart.  There is so much more we had to share. Even as I write this I fear she won’t have an opportunity to read it.  But with her spirit woven into mine I know I can make a difference in my way and in a way Rachel would want too.  Sweet dreams Rachel.  Your life has touched so many.

Ruckin Ducks Rugby Team supports FYB

Ruckin Ducks High School Rugby Team
The high school girls rugby team called the Ruckin Ducks (located near Philadelphia PA) have taken a liking to Boobies and will be raising money to support Feel Your Boobies during their season this year. They plan to donate $2000 to support our effots -- Ruck on girls!  Their program is called Every Try Counts and is based on the fundraising efforts that the Park Ridge High Schools girls sports teams are doing as well (called Every Win Counts).  Both are raising money to support FYB.  In addition, Haverford and Bryn Mawr College female rugby teams have recently expressed interest in getting involved as well.  How’s that for spreading the Boobies message.
I will be making a visit with the Boobies Bus to their tournament on May 11th and hope the girls will show me some rugby moves!
Check out the Ruckin Ducks website at: http://www.ruckinducks.com/
And also a great story that was written about their efforts.
